About Me

Hello My name is Mateo Chumpitaz and this semester I learned how to work with maps. I work with maps from ArcGIS online and learned how to add layers. My country is Cuba so you will see the layers I put for my country. I also learned how to to make Sketchup Models where I built a house, fire department, and a urban garden.

My name is Mateo Chumpitaz at SUNY Oneonta with a Business Economics Major and I am currently a junior. A huge interest of mine is soccer. I played soccer for a big portion of my life. I feel that since soccer is played in most counties, the sport brings the world together.

The country I chose for the semester is Cuba. I chose Cuba because my family on my moms side are from Cuba, so I thought it would be more interesting to know more about the country my family is from. Cuba is the biggest island in the Caribbean and has a coastline that stretches over 3500 miles, and is currently one of the last few countries with a communist government. When Fidel Castro took power in the 1950s you can say the country and especially the city of Havana has been stuck in that decade because of the building structure and cars they have today are from that time period. I have been there first hand to see there is nothing really modern in the country of Cuba but I think they are coming along little by little. Due to the strict government it is definitely harder to visit the country compared to other places, it required a lot of paper work and a visa but was one of the most beautiful countries I have ever seen. The national language of Cuba is Spanish due to Spain colonizing Cuba in the 1500s. The country is filled with a lot of culture from Music, Dancing, and Food. Cuba has contributed different types of music like Cubop, Mambo, and Salsa. Some famous Cuban dances are Rumba, Mambo, and salsa. A lot of Hispanic cultures love to dance but for Cubans it a part of life and is all over the place. Some Cuban dishes are Ropa Vieja, Rice and Black beans, Pork, and Yuca. Food is an important part of the culture and on special occasions there is usually a pig roast that requires a lot of preparation but it is very traditional and it can feed a whole bunch of people. Dance, Music, and Food are 3 big components that make up the beautiful culture of Cuba. Some of Cuba’s biggest exports are raw sugar, nickel, and rolled tobacco. The raw sugar is actually put in different rums made on the island. Rum is a very popular drink in Cuba a lot of Cubans especially my family enjoys drinking rum occasionally. Nickel is a product that is normally used to make stainless steel abroad. Cuba is famous for the Cuban Cigar worldwide so rolled tobacco actually is an important export of the country. Cuban Cigars are very popular, people all over the world that are interested in cigars are very familiar with the quality of a Cuban Cigar. Some of Cuba’s biggest imports are machinery, food, and fuel products. Cuba is a very diverse country that has people of different races and ethnicities that have all contributed to the countries culture. The most popular sport in Cuba is baseball which started being played in Cuba in the 1860s and currently have a competitive league. Also a lot of Cuban player have come to the US to play in the MLB for example Rodrigo Alvarez that came in 1963. As I mentioned before after the communist revolution of Cuba it is one of the last few places you can see classic American cars in great numbers. Cuba used to have two currencies but have recently got away with it so it will be less confusing to for people to purchase items. I remember when I went to Cuba and my parents trying to understand how the two currencies worked and it took them a couple of days to get the currencies down fully. An interesting fact about Cuba is they have a high literacy rate which is 99.7 percent. Wi-Fi is hard to come by in Cuba because of the strict government they have a restricted internet to limit what the citizens of the country see. Cuba was a very interesting country for me to research about and I hope one day I could possibly return to the beautiful island.

This is an urban garden I made through SketchUp which contains produce for the people to go get their food.
